The three lives of his House weren't worth that. How corrupt is that? 61 billion people who would still be alive if Shaddam IV stayed emperor. "We'll be a hundred generations recovering from Muad'dib's Jihad." I've wiped out the followers of forty religions" "Statistics: at a conservative estimate, I've killed sixty-one billion, sterilized ninety planets, completely demoralized five hundred others. He went with the Fremen in order to preserve his house. He had a much more logical grasp on things. Frank Herbert made a point to show that no matter who is in power, whether it be a corrupt dictator or a so called messiah (political, religious or otherwise) the power structures tend to fall into the same patterns.Īnd while he was a pissed off teenager, he was also a Bene-Gesserit trained partial mentat. It’s in Messiah that we see how foolish he was not only to try to rule better, but to rule from an oracular base. He seized the throne in an attempt to correct the corrupt ruling and aristocratic politics going on in the imperium. You’re making it seem as though he lusted for power. He realized he had the Fremen at his disposal to fight the Emperor. They were being exterminated by the Harkonnens who were in cahoots with the emperor. He was a man that time and the kinetic force of power pushed aside in the wake of the Idea of him rather than the actual person. For the priests to kill Paul in the name of their holy Muad’Dib is evidence of the hypocrisy which has become all pervasive and poisons the empire. He essentially tells everyone it is a sham. So in CoD as the preacher he proclaims to the masses all that is wrong with the religion. What was created around Paul around Maid’ Dib is the antithesis of who he is as a person. These priests are drunk on their own self righteousness. To say anything against the religion is to break the law. Church and State are now one so these priests have the final say. People want their own personal forms of power. In Messiah we see how bureaucracy takes hold and the old ways fall into place. You WANT to follow him! He did everything right in Dune for all the right reasons. Paul is the leader you wish you could follow. I think Frank’s idea that power attracts the corruptible is so evident. He was stabbed to death by the very priests who are preaching his holy name. I think Paul’s true death was really symbolic of just how far the religion had gotten out of control.
